Attractive price aside (as H&M had dropped the price on these early in the season), I was drawn to these fisherman sandals because of the thicker sole. These give petite women like me - I’m on the border of regular and petite at 5ft 3- a nice lift, and the lower tops show off the ankles. Meaning I can wear them with longer, fuller skirts, like the H&M Black Voluminous Skirt (see below). These sandals take this kind of skirt nicely into summer.
One downside is the heaviness of the sandal, which most reviewers commented on the H&M website. I also found the sandals slightly bigger and looser on my 4 1/2 sized-feet. So if you’re in between sizes, these might not be so good. However, if you have wider feet, they would be better than the New Look ones (read on)…
These H&M Chunky Sandals can be worn with a longer, voluminous skirt (like this H&M Voluminous Skirt in Black £34.99 - currently sold out) as the sandals have a thick sole and a low top, giving height to the wearer.

New Look’s Fisherman Sandals
The similarity to gladiator sandals is obvious. And that is also the amazing feature of these New Look Black Chunky Fisherman Sandals! Initially, when Googling ‘fisherman sandals’ on the high street, I could only find these New Look ones and they were flying off the shelf! Priced at £29.99, they are more of a splurge. But are they worth it?
I was worried that the high tops would shorten my legs! But actually I found them slimming. The design takes the eye up the legs, and the vertical line in the middle slims them. Voila, you get the gladiator and fisherman look in one, slimmer looking legs, and they go beautifully with a denim maxi skirt too!
Summer 2023, here I come!
